The June 7, 1937, edition of The Denison Press had a feature titled 'Denison 35 Years Ago' which referred back to June 7, 1902. This feature contained an obituary for John Baptiste Carlat who died on that date. Microfilm photo of that 1937 edition of the paper appears at the right of this page. The obituary begins at the bottom left corner of page 1 and is continued at about the center of page 4. Due to the difficulty in reading the fine print of this photo, the obituary is copied below and appears word for word as it was written in the manner of speech used in 1902.
June 7, 1902
John Baptiste Carlat died at the age of 74. His death was the result of a murderous assault made by a negro named Gus Carson, at his farm home several miles northwest.

In the death of Mr. Carlat, one of the most remarkable men that made pioneer history west of the Mississippi, passes away.

Mr. Carlat was a perfect type physically and bid fair to round out a century had not an assassins had laid him low.
His was a model farm in every respect and he was particularly proud of his blooded stock and well-tilled fields.
His daughter, Mrs. W.A. Hollenbeck, went to him when he was assaulted and had him removed to her home on Gandy st. where she ministered to him and he passed away.
Mr. Carlat was a veteran of the Mexican war and marched with Taylor to Chapultapec. When he landed on the Texas coast, a mere lad, the warlike Commanches descended upon his camp and he was carried away into captivity and lived among the Indians two years before he escaped.
Mr. Carlat is survived by several children, the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Crowley with interment in Calvary Cemetery.
