PUB. 1981 Frank and Mildred Chappuis. Frank Chappuis son of Vincent and Pelagie Remacle Chappuis was born November 26 1900 on a farm located in the NE ¼ of Section 27 Wells Township between Roberds and French Lakes. This farm purchased from a homesteader in 1868 by John Claude and Lucy Chappuis Frank’s grandparents is still owned by descendents. Frank had 3 brothers Eugene Clement Ernest and 3 sisters Victoria Mary and Madeleine. In 1918 Frank’s father purchased a second farm located on South Bay of Roberds Lake Wells Township where Frank then lived and farmed with his father and brothers until 1926. They also operated a sorghum press that was brought by John Claude Chappuis from Perryville MO in 1868 and before that from France. It took 3 months for John Claude to make the trip from France to America in a sailing boat. July 13 1926 Frank married Mildred Von Ruden daughter of Henry A. Von Ruden and Jessie E. Lockerby Von Ruden. Mildred was born May 29 1907 in Warsaw Township where her parents resided. They later moved to the Roberds Lake area where her brother Lawrence Von Rude was born. Frank and Mildred resided on the Roberds Lake farm until October 1926 then purchasing a grocery store located near H. H. King Flour Mill and Cannon River Dam west Faribault city limits. They operated this store until 1946. Frank and Mikldred had 2 children--Frank Jr. born 1935 married Geraldine Olmstead 1955. They have 2 children Debra and Michael. They lived in Minneapolis a short time and then built a home on the Chappuis farm at Roberds Lake. Ann born 1941 married Donald Van Ryn in 1961 lived in Maryland WI and then Rochester MN. They have 3 children--Cindy John and Susan. 1946 Frank and Mildred sold the grocery store and purchased his father’s farm located in Section 21 Wells Township South Bay Roberds Lake. Frank was interest in community affairs and actively engaged in farming his 95 acres. He served as Wells Township Assessor 1925-26 Manager of Faribault Livestock Association Secretary-Treasurer of Rice County National Farm Loan Association 1929-37 and in 1951 was appointed Rice County Supervisor of Assessments--a position he held until he retired in 1968 and continued operating his farm. Frank’s wife Mildred was also affiliated with agricultural enterprise serving as office secretary at Northfield Milk Producers Northfield 1924-26 then as secretary in the Rice County Agricultural Extension Office 1926-33 served as office secretary for her husband 1933-35. In 1948 she was hired as the first bookkeeper-office secretary of a newly organized cheese processing plant operating for business on October 1 1948 as Rice County Cooperative Dairy Association in Faribault. The plant later acquired the processing of the nationally known Land O’Lakes Sweet Cream Butter Dried Milk and Grade “A” milk distribution for which she served as office manager and secretary to the General Manager a position she held until retirement in 1972.
