Francois Gladieux arrived in America in 1845 through the port of New York. With his parents he settled in Stark County Ohio where many other French immigrants settled. By 1853 the family had moved to Jefferson Township in Allen County Indiana near the French settlement of Besancon. He remained in this area for the rest of his life.

He served as an Allen County Commissioner for three years and was elected to the state legislature. He acted as Jefferson Township trustee for twelve years and was township assessor for four years. He was one of the first residents of the area to push for better roads. His son Emile (Amiel) was Allen County sheriff at the time of Francois' death.

He and his wife Marie Francoise married 21 Aug 1860 were one of three couples in Jefferson Township to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1910. They had nine known children.
