Nashville is a small village just north of Glenmont Holmes County Ohio. After his marriage Etienne/Stephen worked as a Station Master in Wooster for what became the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also ran his first cabinet making and coffin businesses in Wooster. He can be found in the Business Directory of Wooster in the mid-1860's. Civil War Veterans provided capital as they were paid in script and did not use barter system so the business moved to a more 'promising' location in Mount Eaton again starting a business but only remained in the town for a short time as another Frenchman had established himself prior to their arrival. Mary was born in Mount Eaton Wayne County Ohio and probably baptized at St. Genevieve Catholic Church just outside of Mount Eaton in Calmoutier Holmes County Ohio. The priest who served the parish also served the parishioners in Louisville. Etienne/Stephen was told of the French settlers in Louisville an even 'more promising' location by his brother Claude and the priest. He moved there in 1867 while Eugenia remained in Napoleon (later changed to Glenmont) with her family as she was pregnant with Julius. He built the white frame home on North Chapel Street which became the family home and after the birth of Julius the rest of the family joined him. Etienne/Stephen was of the opinion that Louisville would grow larger than Canton so he remained in Louisville the rest of his life. MODERN LOUISVILLE Broadcast April 22 and 29 1957 from THE STARK COUNTY STORY VOLUME IV PART III THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE CHAPTER 461 page 943 The retail stores of Louisville have shown stronger survival quality than the industries. Numerous businesses go back in a direct family line for two and three generations and the oldest one Paquelet Funeral Home and Furniture businesses for four generations. Some businesses go back by predecessors in the same line but with changing ownership for 100 years. Stephen Paquelet founded the funeral home business in Louisville April 7 1867 - 90 years ago (now 92 years.) His son Frank carried on the business until his death in September 1954 at the age of 93. Frank's son Raymond is in charge today and his sons Richard and Paul have been helping since 1950 Richard having graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and Paul from St. Mary's University of San Antonio Texas. Richard is a licensed embalmer and a licensed funeral director. Stephen Paquelet was a cabinet maker and made his own coffins and furniture. An account book of 1887 shows that the average cost of funerals then ranged between $35 and $60 including the cost of the coffins. A child's coffin cost $4. Customer called for their coffins. Furniture was a part of the business from the beginning. The first furniture store was built in 1870 with additions in 1871 and 1921. The new funeral home was built in 1950. Addendum 2002 The new funeral home was designed by Albert Chenot. The old funeral home was the home of Frank and Laura Beuchat Paquelet on North Chapel Street and the former home of Etienne/Stephen Paquelet was on the other side of the furniture store. The home was occupied next by his daughters Mary Emilia and Rose until she married. At that time it had been bought by Frank from the surviving children upon the death of Stephen. Raymond and Frieda Paquelet and their children then occupied the home from the late 1920's until Paul and Norma moved in the 1950. Upon building their home on South Street in 1956-1957 Richard and Elizabeth lived in the home with their first two daughters Mary Kay and Ann then built their own home. The old store was bought by the Louisville YMCA and was used for several years in that capacity. The entire block except for the property of the F. O. E. was then bought and all of the buildings torn down. The present site of the Giant Eagle Supermarket and the adjoining businesses are on the sites of the old funeral home the old furniture store the home of Etienne/Stephen and Eugenia Dete Paquelet the duplex built by Frank which served as the residence of Raymond and Frieda Michel Paquelet and Martha Paquelet Callan and Helen Paquelet Sherman as well as the property of the Manus family and the Haidet IGA. The furniture business closed it's doors in August 1999 while the funeral business is now being run by Dan Faulk and his wife Francie Paquelet Faulk. The business was purchased from Richard F. Paquelet. Francie represents the 10th generation of funeral proprietors in the family going back to France. By the time the furniture business closed 5 generations had owned the business and 6 generations had worked for the company as bookkeepers deliverymen repairmen and installers as well as working inventory every January. Paul and his son Steven were the last proprietors of the business. Mark and Kristin Paquelet the children of Steven and Rich Paquelet the son of Richard were of the last generation to work at the furniture store.
