Peter Rembold was 18 and working in the livery stable of a hotel owned by his aunt and uncle, Clara and Victor Tarde, in Castroville when cattleman John Knight observed his riding and roping skills and hired him as a cowhand. He made his first cattle drive north with Knight's herd in 1874.
Born Jan. 27, 1857, in Belfort in the French province of Alsace, Peter James Rembold was orphaned when his grandparents, Mary and Francois Rembold, brought him to America. His mother, Justine Sitter Rembold, died when he was 9 days old. The next year, when the family sailed from France to Indianola on the Texas coast, his father James died at sea.
Settling in the Alsatian colony of Castroville, the family spoke only French, in school, Peter learned English and the local Germanic dialect, according to 'Families of Kimble County,' published in 1985.
Castroville, in Medina County, was settled by Alsatians led by Henri Castro in 1844. First a stronghold by Lipan Apaches and Comanche Indians, the county was created and organized in 1848 from Bexar County.
Rembold worked cattle for Chris Schuhardt and Tom Taylor when he saw Kimble County for the first time in 1879, according to granddaughter Jean Rembold Froneberger.
'He pre-empted a tract of land on Pole Hollow on Johnson Fork creek,' Froneberger said. 'He also traded two saddle horses for more land on nearby Sycamore Hollow.'
Peter Rembold and Josephine Catherine 'Katie' Leibold were married in Castroville in 1883. Katie died in 1884, five days after the birth of their daughterJosie.
In 1887, Peter married Allie Ghania Ray in the Noxville community. They had six children: Tom William, Annie Rembold Dixon, Frank Peter, Ollie Rembold Donaldson McCarty and another son and daughter who died at birth.
Peter's oldest daughter, Josie, married Emmett Wood. Tom William Rembold died in a military training camp during World War I.
Frank Rembold married Lucile Marrs on July 22, 1930. They had one daughter, Frances Jean Rembold Froneberger, and three grandchildren: Karen Lynn Froneberger, Mark David Froneberger and Dale Frank Froneberger.
'After a short wedding trip to Carlsbad Caverns, we returned to make our home on the Rembold Ranch where Frank shared as a partner with his father in the family ranching business after his return from France at the end of World War I,' wrote Lucile Rembold.
Although Frank worked the ranch all his life following military service in World War I, he didn't receive title until 1982.
'As the late 1930s brought the growing threat of World War II, we used to watch the military convoys move past the ranch between San Antonio and El Paso on what used to be the main highway but is now the Old Segovia Road,' Lucile wrote.
Lucile Rembold began substitute teaching in Junction in 1943. She spent three summers at Sul Ross College in Alpine to complete her degree and continued to teach history until retiring in 1972.
The severe seven-year drought of the 1950s forced Frank to cut brush and burn prickly pear to keep livestock from starving.
When the drought ended in 1957, there were floods in all the area streams, Lucile wrote. 'The Rembolds lost more than a 100 head of sheep in the river bottom pasture. The rains continued throughout the winter, and rain fell sometime each week.'
'As the drought and floods were national in scope, the U.S. government began programs of soil conservation and reclamation of our natural resources,' Lucile wrote.
In 1991, Frances Jean Rembold Froneberger filed the ranch, known as Elm Creek Ranch, 13 miles east of Junction located on Johnson Fork of the Llano River, with the Texas Department of Agriculture. The Rembold-Froneberger Ranch was honored in the Ranch Heritage program for continuous operation by the same family for 100 years.
Jean and her husband, James Froneberger, have continued to upgrade the land.
Peter Rembold died Christmas Day 1944. Allie Ray Rembold died in 1966. Frank Peter Rembold died March 28, 1984, and Lucile Marrs Rembold died Dec. 21, 1988.
